CELESTE SULLIVAN did her Ph.D. in Anthropology at Brown University. Her theoretical interest is language change in contact. She chose Lahore for her fieldwork because of its rich linguistic history and spent two years there studying language in its social context. She wrote her dissertation on "Language: The Role of Culture, Social Structure, and Economics in Shaping Communication Patterns and Language Form in a Pakistani Multilingual Community." She is now teaching at the University of Rhode Island.
