ALISON SHAW is a social anthropologist at the University of Oxford who has conducted long-term field research with Pakistani families settled in the U.K. Her recent books include: Negotiating Risk: British Pakistani Experiences of Genetics (Berghahn 2009) and Kinship and Continuity: Pakistani Families in Britain (Routledge 2000). Her Urdu publications include Get By in Hindi and Urdu (BBC Books 1989) and A New Course in Urdu and Hindi, Teacher's Guide (SOAS 1991).
