AZIZ AHMAD (1914-1978) started as a fiction writer in Hyderabad, India, and has a number of novels, one of which was translated by Ralph Russell as The Shore and the Wave, several dozen short stories and a book on the Progressive Writers' Movement to his credit. He later moved to Pakistan and worked for the government, and still later to the University of London where he was a lecturer. In the last phase of his life he was a professor at the University of Toronto. Author of several books on Islamic history and culture, his History of Islamic Sicily is considered a classic.
